SNV is facilitating the development and implementation of ecotourism projects in four provinces, and is also working at the national level on an ecotourism support programme.

SNV wants to play a facilitating and coordinating role for the sector in Lao PDR.

Ecotourism in Lao PDR

Lao PDR is one of the fastest growing tourism destinations in Asia. Tourism has consequently become one of the most important sectors of the country’s economy.

Ecotourism offers an opportunity to direct economic development to the local level, thereby contributing to rural development and poverty alleviation. It also offers a chance to contribute to nature conservation, protected area management and cultural survival. Nature-based tourism in particular holds vast promise in Lao PDR, given the extent and wide distribution of protected areas, the variety of possible eco-tourism activities, and the extensive biodiversity and natural beauty of large parts of the country.

Ecotourism is still in its infancy in Lao PDR, and there is still considerable work to be done in order to realize its full potential for the country.

However, Lao PDR is already becoming a destination for tourists interested in ‘eco’ treks and the enjoyment of natural areas. The private sector is responding to this demand, and a large nature-tourism project supported by development agencies has proved very successful.
